This is Chelsea, a four-month-old puppy who has more applications in on her than the Federal Reserve has dollar bills. No, seriously. We have no idea what she is - terrier mix? French Bulldog on steroids? Incredibly cute and sweet, charcoal-colored puppy who's sure to steal your heart? Yeah, that's it!

This adorable girl is learning all of her puppy skills: Housebreaking, basic obedience, leash walking - but what she really loves is playing in the yard with her doggy friends at PAWS.

Chelsea is vaccinated and micro-chipped and will be available once she's been spayed.

Don't Overlook Bailey!

Bailey is a wonderful yellow Lab who loves people. He's not so fond of other animals, which is probably why he's been overlooked for so long.

If you're looking for a dog who wants to do nothing more than put a smile on your face, this is the one! Play fetch? Are you kidding? Bailey will play for hours! Sit by your feet while you take in the latest game? Bailey's in! Go for long walks? Really? Bailey LOVES long walks!! Just be a loyal, loving pal? That's the definition of Bailey!

Normally, this blog focuses on dogs and I leave the cats to the experts, my friends over at Animal Shelter Volunteer Life. But I had the opportunity to take some photos of Cinnamon and Ginger, beautiful calico sisters who are at PAWS waiting for a home together. I think I love these girls because they're sort of dog-like: They greet me at the door when I enter their room with excited meows, looking for head scratches. I think they're just pretending to be cats...

Tater... Sweet Tater!

Tater is a Boxer/Pit Bull mix who was originally adopted out in 2009, but was recently returned to PAWS when his owners had a new baby and could no longer keep him.

He looks so sad in these pictures, but that's probably because he misses his home. Or, he just has those big, brown, sad eyes that melt hearts... He's definitely a loving, cuddly fella, who will sit for ear scratches and belly rubs for as long as you're willing to dish them out! Tater is about four years old and ready to share your sofa - and steal your heart!

It's impossible to get a decent picture of Wendell. He's always on the move! This 11-month-old Beagle is the a friendly, happy, and goofy guy. He's already got dozens of applications in on him. I wish all the dogs garnered this much interest from potential adopters!

Howard - Lab/Pit Bull Mix

Howard is a very stunning, approximately six-month-old, hound/pit bull mix. He's a bundle of energy and is quickly learning good manners.

As with any puppy, he's learning what is a toy and what's not... He's doing really well with housebreaking and obedience lessons. Howard is a wonderful and happy puppy who is not only handsome, but very smart as well!

The Many Faces of Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea has been at the shelter far too long. She was saved from the street by a good samaritan one ice-cold February night almost three years ago. When she first came in, she was half-starved, and about the friendliest dog I'd ever met. She's actually best friends with the three-year-old daughter of one of our volunteers, who visits her frequently.

After setting up a nice, soft bed, giving her food and a big bowl of water, she settled in with an audible {sigh} of relief. I'm sure it felt good to be in a safe, warm place with a full belly for a change.

She's almost impossible to take a picture of because she loves to cuddle. But, I tried!

Sometimes, they don't even have time to warm up the bed! As was the case with pretty Luna, a one-year-old Bassett Hound. She came into the shelter about two weeks ago and was adopted within days. It's easy to see why!

Fred and Penny: You'll never meet more gentle and loving dogs!

Fred and Penny came to PAWS after their owner moved to Connecticut and his housing arrangements fell through. It's a very sad situation whenever someone has to give up their dogs because affordable apartments won't accept pets. And it's huge problem in Connecticut. Our shelters are overflowing with pets who would be with their owners, but can't be because foolish management companies either won't allow pets or put ridiculous weight restrictions on which pets could live there.

Fred is an 11-year old Golden Retriever mix, and Penny is a 10-year old Bassett Hound. They are the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet!

Shower them with cuddles, belly rubs, and kisses, and they'll return the favor for days on end. They love short walks, playing, and just wandering in the back yard enjoying the world's smells. These are low-maintenance dogs, indeed!

These special love bugs must be adopted together - they've known each other all of their lives and are extremely bonded. All they need is a loving home where they can enjoy their golden years.

They are neutered/spayed, up-to-date on all vaccinations, and microchipped.

Karma - A Pit Bull Heroine Needs Your Help!

This is Karma.

Karma saved her human and countless other people during a shooting in my town (Norwalk, CT) this past weekend. I'm not very proud of the city right now, but I'm sure proud of Karma.

She had to have her front leg amputated due to extensive injuries caused by a bullet wound. Her human was also shot. Now, her human is struggling to pay the $4,000 vet bill.

This isn't exactly a bad section of town, and it's not far from our shelter. According to this story, someone came upon the wedding reception (yes, wedding reception) and began shooting.

If you can, please donate. This dog (and her human) deserves it!

Casper Finds a Home

Casper, the goofy English Bulldog, has found a home!

It was important that he went to a home with people who are experienced with this breed (especially in this heat!). We can't tell you how many people wanted this fella, but some of the applications said things like "looking for jogging partner." Not the best form of exercise for this type of dog! Short-nosed breeds have trouble regulating their body temperature, so while they're playful and happy - and would probably love to run with you - it could be a fatal mistake. A leisurely stroll around the block is a much better idea!

OMD, what a week it's been. First, Yeller finds his forever home. Then a family comes in looking for the perfect Pit Bull. Yeah, we happen to have a few of those!!

This perfect lady's name is... VENDI, or Vendelicious, as I used to call her.

Vendi is a definite, bona fide goofball. Toss a Jolly Ball in the yard and off she goes - non-stop! She's a loving little bulldozer, too, who leans against you for ear scratches and looks at you with those big, golden eyes... And "smart" doesn't begin to describe this little lady!

The family who adopted Vendi this week had heard about her (who hasn't - hers is often the Face of PAWS and she appears on our Facebook page frequently), and wanted to meet her. They had recently lost both of their 15-year-old Pit Bulls and their Mastiff of 12 years. They had quite a void to fill and somehow they knew the perfect dog to fill it. VENDI!!

Picture this: Goofball dog, two fully fenced acres, older kids to play with... See where I'm going with this? And I have to say the family is pretty lucky to add this gorgeous and loving piglet to their home, too!

Vendi came to Paws in 2009 when she was just 8 months old. An impulse purchase, her family just couldn't handle her in their small apartment. She's met many people, played with many dogs, and had many overnight visits with volunteers. But there aren't too many folks out there who can handle a dog with this much energy or have the experience we require when adopting a Pit Bull. So, she waited, and waited... Now we know why! This family with kids and two safe acres for romping, was in her future!

Yeller - Adopted and Loving It!

Yeller has a new home AND doggy companion - he was adopted yesterday!

Yeller was overlooked for quite a while because of his age. He's only nine years old, but for some reason, that's old to people - everyone wants a younger dog or a puppy. Big mistake in many cases: In Yeller's case, a lot of people missed out on a great, all-around companion! Yeller gets along with other dogs, kids of all ages, can go to dog parks, baseball games - he's the perfect pooch gentleman.

And that's what his adopters and his new companion Lily learned when they met him. Lily had lost her doggy companion few months back, and had become very depressed, which often happens to dogs who lose their long-time canine friends. Lily is also an older dog, and she really needed a companion to keep her active.

When Yeller and Lily met, they hit it off immediately. After a foster weekend, it was clear that the two brought a new excitement into each other's lives, and it was a doggy love connection. Lily and Yeller's mom and dad say that she's a new dog, and it's as if Yeller has been a part of the family for years and years!

Smooches to you both and hugs to your new mom and dad for seeing the beautiful dog you really are, Yeller!

Cupcakes for a Cause

Do you LOVE cupcakes?

If you're anything like me, any dessert can be on the table, but if there are cupcakes, watch out! I turn into a cupcake-seeking missile. Do not get in my way.

Some of you may know PAWS über volunteer Cathy Paukner. Cathy has dedicated many, many years to the feline side of PAWS, where she works with cats and serves as a Cat Adoption Counselor, matching cats and kittens to homes for a lifetime of love and companionship. What you might not know is that she's an extraordinary chef! She's the talented craftswoman behind the scrumptious hors d'oeuvres served at PAWS' events.

Cathy recently began a business called "Cupcakes for a Cause" where she offers her beautifully crafted delicious, yummy, amazing, luscious, mouthwatering cupcakes for sale and donates a portion of the proceeds to PAWS!

Her flavors range from the more simple (vanilla with vanilla buttercream) to the more exotic (espresso with mocha buttercream decorated with candied coffeebean and a sprinkling of cinnamon), and everything in-between. There are about 15 different selections on her cupcake menu right now. To name just a few:

Cuckoo for Coconut - Triple Coconut (Coconut Cupcake, Coconut Frosting dabbed with a sprinkling of toasted coconut)

Whatz Up Doc – Carrot Cake Cupcake with Fluffy Cream Cheese Frosting decorated with marzipan carrot and dusted with cinnamon

S’Mores for Me – Graham Cracker Crust topped with Chocolate Cupcake, Toasted Marshmallow Frosting dabbed with sprinkling of graham cracker crumbs

Going Bananas – (Bananas Foster) Banana Rum Pecan Cupcakes, Caramel Frosting drizzled with caramel sauce decorated with banana chip and sprinkling of chopped pecans

Tiramisu – Vanilla Cupcake soaked with Coffee Syrup, Mascarpone Frosting decorated with ladyfinger and dabbed with dusting of cocoa

Each cupcake is adorned with an edible little paw print, an adorable signature element Cathy is using to remind people that the dessert they're enjoying is helping a local animal shelter.

About a week ago, I arrived at the shelter and headed back to the kitchen. The whole area was filled with the inviting aroma of maple syrup. Cathy had brought in a few dozen (yes, a few dozen!) of her "Moms Mapley" cupcakes for us to try. OMG. I was walking on clouds.

They were the most beautiful cupcakes I'd ever seen. (My Betty Crockers were never this pretty.) And, oh, the frosting. Oh, my heavens, the frosting. Maple buttercream with crushed toffee. A great way to start a day at the shelter!

Sid, one year later

Sometimes, you just hit the jackpot, as we did when we placed Sid just over a year ago.

Sid is a beautiful Rottweiler with an undocked tail and funny whiskers on his chin. He's a joy to just look at, with a huge smile and enormous brown eyes - eyes that are now filled with the comfort and satisfaction that he's safe and loved. But his story is quite sad - those eyes used to be filled with fear - as he came to us literally a broken and dejected dog.

Sid came to PAWS both physically and psychologically scarred from the abuse he suffered at the hands of a true animal, the "human" who severely beat him with what we think was a baseball bat. This abuse left Sid with permanent injuries to his hind quarters. He also suffered from psychological injuries which caused him to lose the confidence he needed to be a great companion.

This majestic dog spent a year at PAWS being rehabilitated physically and behaviorally. Annie, one of our incredible volunteer/trainers, worked endless hours with Sid, rebuilding his confidence and physical strength. She taught others how to work with him, brought Sid home to meet her dogs, and introduced him to men - one of Sid's real fears.

PAWS received dozens of calls from people who wanted to adopt Sid. After all, he's a gorgeous guy! A beautiful Rottie who was looking for a home. But Sid couldn't go to just any home, he needed a special one, with people who were dedicated to continuing his structured training and ensuring that he had a good, safe life ahead of him.

It took time, but eventually Sid met his new parents, fantastic people who - I'll venture to say - are head-over-heels in love with him! Look at these photos. These are the best folks in the world. They've made such a great life for Sid and I have a feeling Sid has added a bit to their lives as well.

Why is this dog constantly overlooked?!

Apple. Sweet, never tart! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Apple has been at PAWS far too long. And why, I just don't know.

This dog is the perfect companion. He's an office dog at PAWS, which means a few things: He can be trusted not to pull things from the desk, he's perfectly housebroken, AND he doesn't use the computer to visit inappropriate sites! Not too bad for a four-legger. Imagine him in your home. You can leave him for the day, he'll settle nicely, then greet you at the door with love and kisses when you return from a long day at work. Perfection on four paws!

It's true, he doesn't like other animals. As a matter of fact, he doesn't like them at all. So he has to be your one and only pet. You cannot take him to dog parks (which are over-rated in Apple's opinion anyway). But, he does like a nice long walk, a car ride, playing and running in a fenced back yard, and a snuggle - man, can this dog snuggle. He's a dream of a companion - loving and loyal!

In the office at PAWS, he lies at your feet quietly and either rests or plays with a toy. He's really the perfect pet! NO demands, NO destruction of your "stuff," NO constant barking or whining.

So tell me. Why is Apple constantly overlooked? He's perfect, in my opinion!

Casper

Casper, an English Bulldog, is 72 pounds of pure muscle and love! He loves other dogs. And people - boy, does he love people! He is SO sweet, smart, and affectionate!

Although he's good with kids, he's not a small guy - he weighs more than most kids! So we'd recommend that he's placed with kids that are, well, bigger than he is.

He came to us with skin problems due to allergies, and he'll be on a special diet to control this condition for the rest of his life (not a prescription diet, just a grain-free dog food).

Bulldogs aren't for everyone. We'd prefer to place Casper with someone experienced with the breed. They're very sensitive to the heat, and while they need daily exercise to keep them from gaining weight, exercise should be limited in the summer months.

Also they're a short-faced breed, and can become overheated very quickly any time of year. Simply put, if you're looking for a jogging partner, a Bulldog isn't for you!

But, if you're looking for a cuddle companion, filled with love - actually, overflowing with love - Casper may be the one!

"StubbyDog" Features Our Own Volunteer!

StubbyDog is an organization dedicated to changing the way pit bulls are perceived by the public. They hope that their approach of "changing the conversation" - taking it from negative and apologetic to positive and educational - will help to save some of the million plus pit bulls who are being killed in shelters every year.

StubbyDog also brings to light the problems people face just by having a pit bull as a companion. From pit bulls who are service and therapy dogs to people who can't find housing because of the type of pet they have.

Recently, StubbyDog learned about the issue our volunteer Sue Smith faced when her husband Steve's job took him to London. But, as Sue quickly learned, London doesn't "take" pit bulls! Here is what Sue and Steve had to do to keep their family together. (By the way, we're proud to say gorgeous Truffle is a PAWS graduate!)

He's a giant puppy - 72 lbs. - who is currently learning his manners, and he's doing well! At 18 months, Luke is a dog who loves to play, romp, play, romp... you get the idea! But he also loves kisses and cuddles as well.

He's very strong on leash, which is why it's important that potential adopters continue his training. He's still a puppy at heart, and has such potential. He'll make a great companion - a handsome one, too!

How could such a tiny, delicate dog wander the streets - how could someone let this happen to such a teeny dog?? Well, we don't have the answer, but we're thankful that he's now safe here at PAWS.

Vincent is an Italian Greyhound/Chihuahua mix who was found wandering the streets. He's a silly pooch who entertains just by walking into a room. Vincent's secret is confidence - he thinks he's a Great Dane! This fellow's personality shines like the sun, and almost matches the size of his ears! :)

Because of his small and delicate bones, we'd like to place him in an adult-only home, or a home with older children who will respect his size. Which is far from that of a Great Dane!

Rochelle came to PAWS after another local organization had a moderately successful adoption event, and called on other rescues, like PAWS, to take in the remaining animals so they wouldn't be sent back to... wherever.

She was painfully shy, almost feral, in her approach to humans. Okay, simply put, she didn't approach humans. It took quite a while for her to trust certain people, and those were the only people she'd allow near her. She was never, ever aggressive, she'd just shrink back into her crate as if she could disappear.

But, if you were one of the lucky ones she trusted, you would be greeted at the door with a wag of her tail, bright eyes, and that calm, relaxed face of a happy dog! It was worth the time spent with her to see this beautiful girl come out of her shell!

Finding the right home was difficult. She needed a fenced yard - a fence that she couldn't jump! And, she absolutely loves the company of other dogs. Her shyness melts away when another dog is around. She plays without a worry in the world. So another dog in the household was key.

Well, it took almost a year to find the right home for her, but it happened. A wonderful couple had recently lost one of their beloved dogs and heard about Rochelle. They were looking for a companion for their dog who is also shy, so they thought they'd give it a try.

The two dogs hit it off and have become fast friends! Rochelle has taught Sebastian a thing or two and vice-versa.

The couple who adopted Rochelle are perfect for her, because they have the patience and love to work with her and bring out her best. We couldn't have asked for a better fit!

Why is this dog smiling? He'd been waiting for a home since early 2010, and he finally found it!

Handsome Mikey came to PAWS following the death of his owner. He's a cuddly, teddy bear of a dog, who loves all humans, but didn't seem to care for other four-leggers, which made it tough to find him a home.

He met plenty of people - individuals, families, retirees, people from all walks of life. But no one wanted to take on a senior dog who didn't care for other animals.

Finally one day, a nice couple came in who were looking for a sweet, older, housebroken dog. Well, did we have the dog for them: Mikey!

They met Mikey, who impressed them with a few of his "tricks," like "sit pretty," and "paw." They also loved the fact that he still had plenty of spunk, but also settled down nicely - another benefit of adopting an older dog!

So now you know exactly why this dog, and all of us at PAWS, are smiling!

Remember this guy? Boy, how I love this dog! He used to play with Vendi all the time. (Now, before you fall head-over-heels in love with Vendi's goofy grin, she needs an experienced Pit Bull loving home! She's an energetic handful, but she's worth the love training you invest in her, believe me!)

Anyway, Bandit had been with us since Christmas of 2009. Why? I can't say - he's one of those belly-rub-loving, friendly, cuddly, playful dogs who likes other dogs. He's certainly a handsome boy. He stole a million hearts along the way, too.

But no one was as interested as one family who came to see him in Spring of 2010. They fell in love (who wouldn't, honestly). But the timing wasn't right and they couldn't take him home. Oh, well. An opportunity missed. Back to the kennel, Bandit.

Well, in March of 2011, they contacted us again. They had rented a house and saw that Bandit was still available. Could they see him again? ABSOLUTELY!

It was as if Bandit remembered them. They all "clicked" and everyone just knew it was right. A few weeks later, Bandit moved into his new home, has a next door doggy neighbor to play with, and is now living the good life! And he deserves it!

Adoption Update - Beau Finds the Perfect Home - and A Girlfriend!

Beau (sitting on the floor) is a 7-year-old Bichon who lost one eye to glaucoma. He came to Paws in August and is just the sweetest little guy.

A champion cuddler, Beau gets along with other dogs, doesn't mind gentle children, and loves everyone he meets.

The catch? Beau's previous owners didn't teach him to eliminate outdoors, so he has occasional accidents inside.

Our 1st goal was to try to housebreak him. Not an easy task in a kennel filled with 20+ other dogs who also needed attention. Goal #2 was to find him the right home - one with a patient owner who would continue the task of working with him until he understood that eliminating outside was oh-so-much-better than doing so inside - also not an easy task.

This past Sunday, Paws held its 3rd Annual Bark in the Park fundraiser, and Beau was one of the shelter dogs who attended. Aside from the fact that his "Adopt Me" donation vest was stuffed to the brim with donations (he's a charmer, I'm telling you!), he attracted quite a following of people interested in him... Including this lovely couple who have a very sweet and loving 7-year-old Bichon of their own! Was it Karma?

Beau, Molly, and this couple spent quite a while together at the park on Sunday. One thing led to another, and by Wednesday Beau not only had a wonderful new home, he had a new girlfriend, too! Just look at the smiles on all four faces!

I love a happy ending, and I don't think it could have been better than this!

So, I'm going to focus on seven of the great dogs at Paws and share things about them!

1) Apple has been at Paws for some time now, almost 1.5 years, and he doesn't deserve it! Apple's only "crime" is that he doesn't care for other animals. He's perfectly housebroken, doesn't destroy a thing when left alone, cuddles with the best of them, and is extremely playful. He's the perfect companion!

2) Bandit has been waiting for his forever home for over six months. He's a loving, sweet, and playful Pit Bull mix who will sit on your lap for hours. He loves the company of other dogs, and would appreciate a home with a yard and maybe a playpal for a good romp!

3) Francois, a Mastiff/Pit Bull mix, has also been at Paws far too long. He was abandoned one day and was found tied to our fence. This fella can hold three tennis balls in his mouth at once! He's definitely a favorite at Paws!

4) Gizmo, a beautiful Siberian Husky, originally came in with her dad. He has since been adopted, but Gizmo is still with us. She's a gorgeous girl, and would love to be in a home with someone who can spend time with her as she loves people!

5) Mikey! Oh, what a teddy bear! This boy is everything you could ever want in a furry companion. Housebroken, cuddly, lovable, loving. Why is he still at Paws? He's nine years old, and has lots of spunk. Throw a tennis ball and Mikey is at it. Fill up the kiddy pool - well, just look at the picture!

6) Sweet Pea is (shhhh!) my personal favorite. She came to us after a volunteer found her wandering one freezing cold night during a snowstorm. It was obvious that she had recently had puppies, but they were no where to be found. Sweet Pea was thin as a rail, her ribs poking through her skin. I remember taking her in that night; I'll never forget the look of gratitude in her eyes when I set up her kennel with food, water, and a huge, fluffy bed. She sank into it with a sigh...

7) Whitey Ford! Yes, this dog is dressed as a Yankee, and he's as playful as one! This senior boy came back to Paws after being in a home for 10 years. He's an MVP in our book: Most Valuable Pooch! Whitey keeps his room spotless and loves going for walks, but isn't too fond of sharing the spotlight with other animals.

Charlie was only at Paws for a couple of weeks, and he had a chance to slim down a little, find a home, and make a lot of people happy. (He's wearing an e-collar because he had just been neutered.)

You'll recall that he came to us after his human passed away, which is difficult for a dog, but Charlie didn't have to wait long to find love all over again!

Okay, so I have a really soft spot for this gal.

She was at Paws four years ago, and was then known as Ally. Her most recent owners had to give her up when they could no longer care for her.

I wish I could scoop up this love bug! Sadie is THE best cuddler in town.

She's a "petite" Pit Bull, small in stature, only about 45 lbs. But she's big on love. And can she smile!

Her red and white markings are stunning, and there's not much she wouldn't do to please you.

We think she might get along with some dogs, but an introduction would be necessary.

Sadie is about four-years-old, spayed, and up-to-date on all vaccinations. If you want a playful, yet cuddly pup, this is the girl for you!

Charlie is a chubby, handsome Cocker Spaniel who came to Paws after his owner passed away.

This four-year-old sweetie is now on a diet. :) He likes friendly dogs, and gentle, quiet, youngsters.

As a chubster, Charlie would love to live the life of Couch Potato. But, a home with a little activity - a daily walk - would be best for this cuddly fellow!

Marvin's parents had to give him up when they decided that they could no longer care for him. They first adopted him from us when he was a four-month-old puppy.

He's now grown into a beautiful two-year-old Yellow Lab with an ear-to-ear grin! This boy needs some basic obedience training, and you'll have a great companion.

If you have the time to invest and you're looking for a great walking partner, Marvin could be The One!

Golden boy looking for a home!

Chico is a 4 1/2 year old Lab/Retriever mix, who is the gentlest boy in town. Sadly, he spent most of his life ignored in a back yard. But you'd never know it the way he showers you with love and affection when he greets you!

He's about 75 lbs., and he walks well on a leash. I think this boy would love a family so he can be the dog he never had a chance to be - toss a ball, cuddle, go for walks - that's what Chico would love!

Yes, she is! Sweet as sugar, that is.

This little Maltese was given up by her owner who couldn't take her with her when she moved.

Sugar is a tiny gal, who really needs to gain some weight. She was a picky eater when she first came to the shelter, but now she's starting to eat a little better.

This sweetie would do best in a home with older children who understand that a small dog isn't a toy, probably ages 10+.

Sugar will be spayed next week, then she's ready to go!

Adoption Update - Ziggy

I had the pleasure of delivering Ziggy to his new home this past Monday. He now has a house of his own with fenced back yard, perfect for the Zigster to play and run around in.

Ziggy's new mom had a Pit Bull for about 12 years, and her son was only eight years old when that dog first came to live with them. As you can imagine, her loss hit them very hard.

Enter Zigster, and the smiles were back on their faces! Even Ziggy is smiling! Yeah, everyone is happy!

Sydney's mom reports that our spoiled little girl is finally eating better (she experienced a poor appetite at the shelter), but wants to be fed like a true princess: from a spoon!

Why is it that Pomeranians always look like they're smiling? I mean, doesn't this look like a happy dog?

Well, Colby is a happy dog! He's happy in your lap, near your side, in your lap, on a walk, in your lap - you get the idea, right? He's a friendly, affectionate, and - well - happy little guy.

Colby will be three years old next month. He's been neutered and is up-to-date on his vaccinations. He has tested positive for Lyme, but he's asymptomatic. He was found to be positive during a routine vet visit, and is currently being treated.

The only time Colby isn't happy is when he has to share food and treats with another dog. Then, he's very UNhappy, and he shows it, thinking he's as big as any dog in the place!

So, if you're looking for a smiling Pomeranian, Colby might be the guy for you! Just hold the treats until the two of you are alone!

Update - Gracie

Remember this dog, with the sad, dull, and patchy coat? Gracie had lost most of it to flea allergies. It didn't dampen her spirits, but it did take away from the beautiful personality that she has.

Adoption Update - Charlie and Oliver

Charlie (left, formerly known as Jada) was adopted from PAWS in 2004 as a 10-week old puppy, and Oliver (right, formerly known as Padre) was adopted last month when he was 3 1/2 months old.

Charlie and Oliver have become fast friends and can't play together enough! This picture was hard to get - there aren't many moments when they're actually sitting still!

Buster, the Parson Russell in the second picture, was adopted in 1999 from Russell Rescue. He likes to get in on the action, too!

Annabelle is a teacup Australian Shepherd who was given up by her owner.

This vociferous young lady weighs in at just 3 pounds, and is four months old. Full grown, she should weigh about eight pounds.

She has all of the characteristics and tenacity of a full-sized Aussie - the voice and tendency to dominate are definitely there!

She's a lovely little girl, and already has a ton of applications in on her. What would you expect? But I hope people realize that size doesn't matter with this pup; she's a HUGE dog in a tiny body! :)

Meet Al, a cute and happy little terrier mix! He looks to be a Westie mix, and he's got the market cornered on gentlemanly good looks!

Al was given up by his owners because they had to move and they couldn't take them with him.

This little guy seems very sweet, but he's nervous right now as he settles in at the shelter.

He's not a fan of cats but he likes other dogs and has lived with children as young as 9-years-old. He himself is just 2 1/2!

Al has to be neutered before he's placed in a home, and he's up-to-date on all vaccinations.

I think he'd make a nice little companion for someone!

This mushball is almost as sweet as he looks. :0)

A five-month-old AmStaff mix, he's already been in one home, but as he grew, he became a bit much for the dachshund pair he was living with. So his original foster mom decided she should take him back, teach him a few more manners, and find him a more appropriate home (she's one of PAWS's BEST volunteer/staff members!).

Ziggs needs an owner who is experienced with the breed. The perfect owner will be a good doggie leader and provide structure and training to our mushball. Ziggs is highly food-motivated, so training will be that much easier!

Ziggy can live with older, calm, and dominant dogs who will keep him in line and remind him that he's not the boss.

As I said, Ziggs is a mushball and will definitely wiggle his way into your heart! He gives the best kisses and cuddles! Typical Pit Bull - love with fur!

Rochelle is very, very shy with humans but she flourishes when around other dogs. She's not at all aggressive to people; rather, she shrinks away. We've gotten to the point (in just 1 1/2 weeks) where she'll greet me when I walk into her room, which I think is wonderful progress.

Outside with other dogs, she plays just like any dog - running, grabbing toys, play-bowing. It's a beautiful sight! Sometimes I wish they could talk or I could read their minds. I wish I knew what makes her shrink away from people. But I know that the right home - with another dog or two - will bring out the best in this girl!

Rochelle is about five-years-old, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccinations.

Doc had a hard start in life. Sick and left to die in a municipal shelter, PAWS pulled this starving puppy and literally saved his life. Now, Doc has gained weight, confidence, and the love of everyone at the shelter.

This Boxer/Pit Bull mix is smart as a whip and with obedience training, this energetic pup will be one amazing companion! He also has play pals at PAWS, so we know he gets along with other dogs!

Doc is about a year old, neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations.

Big, goofy guy, looking to be your only love...

Bailey is a yellow Lab who loves to play ball. And I mean LOVES to play ball! You can toss the ball for hours on end, and he will run to get it, drop it at your feet and look for more. He was brought to PAWS when his owners moved and couldn't take him with them.

The only problem with this perfect fella is that he does not get along with other animals at all. If you can provide a home without animals for this guy, you'll have the undying affection of one great dog!

This four-year-old beauty is neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Just add love... and a tennis ball!

Bella and Bindi are mom and daughter Dachshunds. Bella (black & tan) is about 7 years old, and Bindi (red) is about 5. They came to PAWS after being pulled from Easton Animal Control.

Aren't they gorgeous! We have to place them together because they're extremely bonded to one another. They're a riot to see together from playing to cuddling together for a nap.

We suggest placing these little ladies with children 12+. They're spayed, up-to-date on their vaccinations, and just waiting for the right home!

Our poor Ty. He came in as an 8-month-old, out-of-control, fence-jumping (and I mean 6-foot stockade fence-jumping) puppy.

He was adopted out to a wonderful woman with kids, but that didn't work out (no fault of Ty's). He came back.

He waited. And waited.

He was adopted out to a nice retired couple, but that didn't work out (again, no fault of Ty's). He came back.

He waited again. You could see depression creeping into the poor pooch's eyes.

Over time, Ty did calm down, and with the help of his mentor, Beth Z., he's gone to obedience class and really learned his manners. Ty grew into a stellar, mature dog who walks well on a leash, knows a trick or two, and behaves like a gentleman.

But people overlooked him. Big Black Dog Syndrome, I'm sure. And even though he's probably Lab/Great Dane mix, people probably thought they saw Pit Bull in him.

No one saw beyond the Big Black Dog and into the beautiful eyes, the calm demeanor, and overwhelming sweetness that was Ty.

Until this family walked in.

Ty walked into the playroom and sat at their feet. No doubt, Ty was thinking "okay, I'll go through the motions - again- just for the heck of it. It gets me out of my kennel."

Boy, did they fool him. They came back with their young son. They came back to sign the paperwork. They came back and took Ty home!

Oh, Ty, we are so proud of you and happy for you. We know this is the family for you. Love, hugs, kisses - everything your way, bubba!

Oh, what can I say about this beautiful girl!

Gracie is a miniature Schnauzer, who came in from Bridgeport Animal Control. This poor dear has lost a good deal of her coat to flea allergies. But we've treated her, and her coat should come back to the beautiful and lustrous condition we're sure it once was.

Those ears! She wears them well. Gracie loves people, and will bark for attention as well as stand on her hind legs and dance! And the ears go up and down. Too cute! She also seems to like the company of other dogs.

This cuddle-bug is ready for a new home! And what a lucky person or family to add this lovely lady to their home!

Gracie is between 4-6 years old, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccinations.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is adorable!

She's been described, and fairly accurately, as a miniature coyote. Of course, very miniaturized... She's about the size of a Chihuahua, and is being called a long-haired Chihuahua mix.

Her coat is the color of, well, Cinnamon, hence the name. She's very sweet to humans, but not so fond of other dogs. This picture doesn't do her justice; she's quite the little lady, so I'd suggest that you come in to meet her for yourself. She's as lovely and delicate as you would expect a pup named Cinnamon to be!

Cinnamon is about a year old, seems to be housebroken, and is up-to-date on vaccinations.

Molly

It's obviously "you call them one thing, and I'll call them something else week" at PAWS. Because they're calling precious Molly a Lab/Corgi mix, and I'm not seeing it.

Now, anytime a dog with short legs comes in, it's flagged a Corgi. But, and this picture isn't very good, if you look at her legs, you'll see Jack Russell. (Google "shorty jack russell" and you'll see what I mean.)

Anyway, Molly is one of those dogs with one ear up, one down, and deep brown eyes that drill into your soul. She's the perfect size, and she's very, very sweet.

At two-years-old, Molly is housebroken, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccinations. I don't know how she is with other dogs, children, or cats yet, but she seems fairly calm when I walk her past dogs. We'll see! She is a beauty!

Mikey

Mikey is soooooooo adorable! He looks like a stuffed animal that you just want to hug, and hug...

His cage card calls him a Border Collie mix, but (since I have a Border Collie) the only thing I see that he has in common with a BC is color. I see a little Akita, maybe. And I don't know what else, other than Big Mush mixed in.

Mikey is 9-years-old and he came to us when his owner passed away. This is one sweetheart of a dog.

I remember when I was a little girl, a hundred or so years ago, my father taught my dog to "beg." I haven't seen or been able to teach a dog to do this since then. Mikey can do this! And it's so darned cool because he holds it for a few beats, looks at you with those eyes, then gently takes the treat offered.

Can you tell that I love this guy???

Mikey is up-to-date on his vaccinations, neutered, and just waiting for a home. The best thing about an older dog: HOUSEBROKEN!

You'll want to meet Mikey, definitely.

Howard

Meet Howard. "Goofy" would also have been a good name.

This handsome Boxer is about 9-months old. He was found wandering - WANDERING! - and was turned in to Norwalk Animal Control. Our good friends there called us and now he's our goofy boy.

Howard appears to be housebroken and seems to like other dogs. He's okay with cats (not aggressive) but he plays much too hard to actually live with one.

He's really quite beautiful. He' got a dark patch on his face and a dark brindle body with white patches on his neck and chest. Right now, he's all legs as he has to grow just a bit more to fill out.

I just can't imagine how purebreds end up in Animal Control and no one claims them, but it happens. Just another example of why you should check out your local shelter when considering a pet!

Howard is up-to-date on his vaccinations, he'll be neutered, and then he's ready to go!

Whitey

Here's a gorgeous fellow: Whitey.

Whitey came back to us after 10 years. 10 happy years in a home! He's now 13-years-old, and doesn't deserve to be in a shelter at this time in his life. His owner got married and his new wife is allergic to Whitey.

I thought "wow, 13? He's got to be rickety and slow moving." But not this guy! He's very spry and young for his age, and I was pleasantly surprised!

He's got a beautiful coat, thick and lush. He looks like a mix of American Eskimo and Samoyed.

Right now he spends his time sniffing at the door, owner-searching, but that will pass with time. He's a really sweet boy, neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, and housebroken. And, as sweet as he looks in this picture! Big lug!

Adoption Update - Max

Remember Max? I love Maxie; he was so scared when he first came to PAWS. He also has a very difficult time trusting people, which made it extremely hard to find the right home for him.

If someone wanted to adopt him, they had to be committed enough to come back several times so he could get used to them and have a chance to warm up and trust them.

Well, this WONDERFUL woman did just that. I love this woman! At first, she came in to meet our Maxie because she was sponsoring him through our sponsorship program. The day she came in, someone was very serious about adopting him, but I could see that she, too, had some interest in our boy.

But, that adoption fell through. Max just wouldn't warm up to the man. This happened over and over, and our Max waited and waited for a home.

Well, soon after, this lovely lady came back. Again and again. And Max sat on the couch next to her, then flipped over so she could rub his belly... And before you knew it, he was on her lap!

This is what companionship, love, and devotion is all about, and it makes my heart melt!

Luky (no, not "Lucky," LuKy) is a sweet 2 1/2 year-old Beagle who came to us when his owner would no longer care for him.

He's a shy fellow who loves to cuddle. He'll nudge closer and closer to you, and if you stop petting him, he'll nudge some more.

He seems very uncomfortable with quick moves, so Luky would love a quiet home, preferably without children. He enjoys quiet play with his stuffed toys and seems to like the company of some dogs.

This spicy little guy (sorry, I couldn't resist) is a nine-year-old Chihuahua who was given up by his elderly owners. Unfortunately, he's only known them, so he's taking a while to get used to other people.

T is a little chubby. Okay, a lot chubby. So we're working on slimming him down a bit. Okay, a lot. :-)
He's got beautiful caramel markings on his soft white coat; he's a really handsome guy!

He gives quite a wag when we approach him, so I think he'll get over his fear of us quickly. Once he does, he's going to make someone a very fine companion!

This little squirt is a bundle of energy. We think she's got some Boston Terrier in her, but what else? Bulldog? Maybe. Tank? Probably!

She's a petite girl who's got a cute little snort. Midge is about six-months-old, and is working on her housebreaking. She's doing very well for a puppy in a shelter, too!

Unfortunately, we couldn't find a home to take Casey and Gizmo together, but we found the next best thing: TWO wonderful homes.

Gizmo found a great man to spend her life with. This gentle soul found another gentle soul and we're so happy for both of them! This was a match made in heaven.

And Gizmo's dad, Casey, also found a wonderful home with a young couple who were looking for a companion and Casey fit the bill.

Brutus

A fitting name for a... small dog?? Well, yes indeed! Brutus lives up to his name in personality!

This little fellow, a Chihuahua mix, is about the cutest little guy in town. He is tiny, and a shy fella at first, but he's not nippy at all (some small dogs can be nippy). He loves to be held, but he also loves to walk (or I guess run, with those teeny little legs!) proudly by your side.

Brutus is about three years old and seems to like the company of smaller dogs; we're not sure of larger dogs just yet, but he doesn't seem reactive when he's walked by their cages.

With a personality like Brutus', I'm sure he won't be at PAWS for long!

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin is a VERY energetic fellow! He's also a hoot to just watch as he keeps himself entertained. Charlie has a crazy dance that he does where he lifts his front foot then seems to discover it, almost as if he didn't know it was there - left, right, left, right... I'm sure this could go on for quite some time!

Mr. C is a Chihuahua mix, about two years old and will be neutered soon. He's was a bit mouthy when he first came in, but he seems to be calming down nicely. What he really needs is a fenced in yard where he can burn off some of his energy, then he'd settle down nicely inside. He does seem to do well with dogs of his size; we don't know about larger ones.

This goofy guy won't last long - he's too entertaining!

Adoption Update - Donna

I don't know if I ever wrote about our sweet girl Donna.

Donna came to us when her owner could no longer care for her. She had laryngeal paralysis, which meant she had to have tie-back surgery in order to get enough oxygen into her system. PAWS provided this life-altering surgery for Donna, and this amazing dog pulled through with flying colors.

At 9-years-young, Donna outshines many dogs in her energy and playfulness! She often played with other dogs at PAWS. She also gets along with cats and loves children. She's just one of those great, all-around pets that people are always looking for. But, her special needs were a barrier to every family who considered her for adoption.

Because of her tie-back surgery, Donna needs to be hand-fed for the rest of her life. This is to prevent any food from being inhaled into her lungs, causing an infection. (It takes literally five minutes to feed her twice a day.) She also needs to be kept cool in very hot, humid weather, and she can't go in pools or lakes (again to keep water from entering her lungs). Not really a big deal.

Well, on Saturday, Donna hit the jackpot. A wonderful couple came in with their 13-year-old Shep/Collie mix. One of the women works with horses, who are apparently prone to laryngeal paralysis, so she was very familiar with the condition. Both are fans of older dogs, and they wanted a companion for their current dog. They had originally stopped in to meet Zoe, our 17-year-old Pit Bull mix, but she wouldn't have been a good fit for their current living situation. So... What about Donna??

Bingo! A love match! They met Donna and loved her; Donna and their dog met and all went well - the rest is history!

Donna now has a future of tennis balls, playing with her new brother, and visits to a horse farm!

We love you Donna!

Now here's a dog after my own heart.

Another of the Christmas Crew, Mindy is a petite (about 35-45 lbs.), 4-year-old, Pit Bull mix. This ginger girl is housebroken, she's a quiet dog, and she loves to cuddle. No arguments, no muzzle pushing or punching, no "me, me, me." She just likes to be in a room with you. That's it.

She loves to curl up next to you and just know that you're there with her. I think she feels very secure knowing that someone is next to her, and you know what? Knowing that she's next to you feels pretty darned good, too!

The first picture's a bit blurry, but the second one shows the absolute cuteness of her face.

Gidget

This beautiful girl appears to be a Pit Bull/Spaniel mix, but it's anyone's guess. At first glance, her chocolate coat looks good enough to eat!

Gidget also arrived on December 24th, part of the Christmas Crew. She's got absolutely no manners, but we're going to work with her to change that! She needs to learn basic obedience and housebreaking. She's probably 8-10 months old, and is in excellent health.

Once Gidget learns her basics, she's going to be a great companion. This stunning girl is just looking to make someone very happy, and wants nothing but love and companionship for a lifetime!
